By the mid-1960s he had established his reputation as one of Australia's most accomplished young painters and jewellers. He travelled to England, where he made sculptures and represented Britain in international jewellery exhibitions. He worked with master technicians in Paris, producing splendid lithographs. His work has moved between exuberant painterliness and cool calculation, but it has generally been underpinned by a sharp sense of design and a commitment to fine proportion. He became increasingly interested in his Greek background, and aspects of the Byzantine visual tradition have found their way into his work. 'A Renaissance man,' a journalist observed, adding, 'without the Medici'. Raft's capacity to work across a wide spread of disciplines - painting, drawing, sculpture and jewellery - has been equalled by few artists in our time."
